Sometimes you just need a little helper to get in those hard to reach places! Jeremiah (age 3) is our helper extraordinaire! He is always excited to help out with projects. This last weekend as we were finishing up our painting of the aft berths we also took on the keel.
After sitting in our boat for a few minuets we knew the first project to tackle would be getting the strong diesel smell out of the boat. We knew that the tank needed to go, as there was a hole rusted through on the top and we were fairly sure there were more on the underside as well.
Even though the boat project is consuming most of our spare time, It is important to take a break from the project and play! We are lucky to have our boat in a yard that is right next to a beach/dike. It is great to be able to take the kids for a walk and let them play in the sand and wave to the boats as they come down the channel. Our boat has a story of her own just as her owners before us do. The following is a compilation of research found on the interned and directly from her past owners there are many links under our links/resources tab if you wish to read further. We are so excited to be another page in her history book and proud to share her past chapters with you now. Our boat is a 1964 Cal 40 hull #14. This classic boat design was made famous by its wins in multiple transpac races. Our boat has a great history of its own, the original owner was the son of the owners of The Malibu. She is getting older in age and as such she is in need of some love! The previous owner bought her in California with hopes of sailing her home to Washington only to lose her rudder not even a day into the journey. She has spent the rest of her days in boat yards getting this and that taken care of but never fully completed. Here are a few pictures of her as we got her. I will also be posting more on her history at a later date. It was a little more than 2 years ago when Jeff and I decided we wanted to sail around the world with our kiddos. Jeff grew up boating with his family in the San Juan and BC waters. His parents instilled a love of the boating lifestyle as well as an impeccable work ethic in him. Jeff remembers most of his weekends growing up working on the boat in the boatyard in La Conner or out on the water. I did not grow up in the boating community, I did however spend almost every weekend around the water as a competitive swimmer. As I got older we would go camping with friends who had ski boats and were always letting the kids help drive the boat to the docks. When I met Jeff I had no clue what the bottom of the boat was called, but i knew that I loved going up to the boat and hanging out. I loved going up to Desolation Sound for the first time, and I knew that this was going to be a very big part of our way of life. |
